Martin Cobian

Martin Cobian is a PhD anthro student at the Graduate Center and adjunct Lecturer at Lehman College, CUNY and the University of Puerto Rico. His research focuses on the Agrarian Question, Food Politics and Alternative Agri-food Movements in Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and Latin America. He is also head coordinator of the Jíbaro Mutual Aid Center at Lares, Puerto Rico, where he works with small scale highland farmers and rural communities advocating for agro-ecological reform and equitable agrarian policies on the Island.

In the context of what appears to be inexorable urbanization, it is just as clear that agrarian questions are deeply enmeshed in the political, social, economic, and cultural challenges of contemporary existence. How have newer regimes of capital, particularly those associated with agri-business and food conglomerates, both formed and fractured agricultural communities?
