Sooran Choi is a PhD student in Art History at the CUNY Graduate Center. Choi’s dissertation, “The South Korean ‘Avant-Garde,’ 1967-1992: Subterfuge as Radical Agency,” explores the social and political tensions between the country’s military dictatorships and the opposition, comprised mostly of artists, students, and intellectuals who defined themselves as avant-garde artists.

Consciousness and Revolution

The place of consciousness in radical theory and practice is a subject of significant dispute. Marx believed that much of what we construe as consciousness is “false,” a rationalization or an ideological reflex that stands between people and the “true material needs” of their life processes. Are consciousness and revolution mediated in the same ways today?
