Is the global hip hop ‘hood more a fantasy than a reality? Hip hop galvanized the imagination of young people around the world, but it couldn’t erase the difficulties of translating lives, cultures, and political visions.
Join Sujatha Fernandes (Sociology, Queens College and The Graduate Center, CUNY) and a panel of hip hop artists and writers, including Imani Perry from the Center for African American Studies at Princeton, journalist William Upski Wimsatt, emcee and PhD Student of Social and Cultural Analysis at NYU Marlon Burgess, and Cuban rapper from group RCA Julio Cardenas, for the launch of her new book Close to the Edge: In Search of the Global Hip Hop Generation.

Co-sponsored by The Center for the Humanities, the PhD Program in Sociology, Center for the Study of Women and Society, Committee on Globalization and Social Change, and Verso Books
