Plotting Abolition
The film will be followed by a discussion with filmmaker Sylvia Ryerson, also a member of the Building Community Not Prisons Coalition, California Prison Moratorium Project organizer Craig Gilmore, Sarah Haley, author of No Mercy Here: Gender, Punishment, and the Making of Jim Crow Modernity, and Judah Schept, author of Coal, Cages, Crisis: The Rise of the Prison Economy in Central Appalachia and a member of the new Critical Resistance chapter in Central Appalachia. This event will connect the struggle to stop the construction of a federal prison in Letcher County, Kentucky with abolitionist struggles from Stop Cop City to the campaign to free the Mississippi 5 to the fight against the borough-based jails here in New York.
